HISTORY

In the early 1970s, the Wooster Racquet Club opened and offered the Wooster community four indoor courts and programming that created a thriving community of tennis players. When that facility closed in 2015, it left hundreds of tennis players without an indoor tennis home. Players had to travel out of town during the cold months to continue to play the game.

At about the same time, Richard Seaman, a passionate tennis player, retired from a 40-year career as the CEO of Seaman Corporation, his family’s local textile manufacturing business. He had a dream to fill this void. With much collaboration between his family, individuals at Seaman Corporation and with the local community, he founded the Aspen Racquet Club. Designed to meet the needs of the existing tennis community and to grow the sport in this area, Aspen Racquet Club offers six indoor courts. The facility is designed and equipped to host United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournaments, provide recreational and competitive league opportunities, and offer an array of high quality, professionally staffed programs for players of all ages and abilities.

The club features Seaman Corporation’s FiberTite roofing membrane and a 254KW solar array on its roof that is designed to generate enough power to meet the majority of the club’s annual electric needs. The Club also features Seaman Corporation’s specialty textiles as canopies at the entrance of the Club, in its curtains around the courts, as a ceiling liner and also in the padding on the walls.

The Club name is inspired by the beauty of an aspen grove, which is the largest single living organism on earth. In an aspen grove, each tree appears to stand on its own but all are part of a single plant, sharing markings and characteristics unique to the grove. The goal of Aspen Racquet Club is to serve, support and grow a vibrant local tennis community.

CLEAR CREEK PARK

Approximately twelve acres of land surrounding the Aspen Racquet Club has been donated to the City of Wooster, which opened Clear Creek Park in the spring of 2022. Open to the public, the park features walking paths and a pavilion. The design of the park is the result of collaboration with the City of Wooster, Seaman Corporation, and park planning resources.

The investment in the tennis club and the park benefits the general public along with the associates of nearby local businesses, and will contribute to the health, wellness and quality of life initiatives of the Wooster community.
